August to September can be a strange time for actors.
Summer isn’t quite over, but you can already feel the energy shifting. The slower pace of the summer months begins to pick up, new projects are on the horizon, and suddenly you’re thinking about auditions, self-tapes, classes, and everything else that comes with a busy acting season.
But before you jump headfirst into Fall, take a moment to prepare. Instead of waiting for the next audition to arrive, use this time to get organized, reconnect with your craft, refresh your materials, and make sure you’re ready to say yes when the right opportunity comes along.
Here are a few ways to make the most of this time and set yourself up for a successful booking season!
1. Refresh Your Actor Materials
Before auditions pick up, take a fresh look at your headshots, resume, demo reel, and casting profiles.
Are your headshots current? Have you added recent credits or skills to your resume? Is your reel showcasing your strongest work? If you’ve changed your look, gained new credits, developed new skills, or filmed stronger footage, this is a great time to make those updates. Your materials should make it easy for casting professionals to understand who you are and what you bring to the table.
2. Get Back Into Acting Training
Summer can be a wonderful time to relax and recharge, but even the best vacation needs a return date. If your acting training slowed down over the summer, this is the perfect time to get back into a regular routine.
Take an acting class. Practice a monologue. Work on scene study. Read a play. Try an improv exercise. Get together with another actor and rehearse. The goal isn’t to overwhelm yourself with a strict schedule. It’s to reconnect with the habits that keep your instrument strong.
Think of it like stretching before a workout. You don’t want your first acting “workout” of the season to be a high-pressure audition. Give yourself time to warm up.
3. Prepare Your Self-Tape Setup
Self-tapes are an important part of today’s audition process, so make sure your setup is ready to go.
Check your lighting, camera, sound, and background setup. Have your list of favorite readers and coaches ready. Record a quick test and make any necessary adjustments.
The goal isn’t to create a complicated production. It’s to make sure technical issues don’t distract from your performance. A little preparation now can save you a lot of stress later.
4. Revisit Your Acting Goals
Before Fall gets busy, take some time to check in with yourself. What do you actually want?
Maybe you’re hoping to book your first television role. Maybe you want to get more theatrical experience. Perhaps you’re interested in comedy, voiceover, commercials, or new media.
Your goals don’t have to be enormous. They just need to be meaningful to you. Try writing down three goals for the upcoming season. Then ask yourself: What can I do now to support those goals?
If you want to strengthen your comedy skills, take an improv class. If you’re interested in television, watch more episodic work and study how actors create specific, natural performances. If self-tapes make you nervous, practice until the process feels more comfortable.
You can’t control when you book. But you can control how prepared you are.
5. Keep Living Your Life
Preparing for Fall and episodic season doesn’t mean spending every minute thinking about acting.
Go to the movies. See a play. Spend time with friends. Try something new. Get outside. Read a book that has nothing to do with acting.
Actors need life experiences. The people you meet, places you visit, and experiences you have all become part of the creative material you bring to your work.
So don’t spend every moment waiting for your career to happen. Live your life and bring it into the room.
